Not very impressed

I watched The King of Staten Island, and it was a good movie, but I don't understand why anybody is entertained by this guy. His acting is, well, bad. He had a few moments in the film but there was so much hammy out of character crap. He's always breaking into his stupid smile at the most inappropriate times. Yes, I get it, being serious makes you uncomfortable. It was definitely not a character choice.

I haven't seen his stand up, so maybe that's where he shines. I've been really tuned out from SNL since probably 2011ish, so I'd never seen his work on that show. After Staten Island, I tried to watch some sketches with him that were supposed to be good, and I hated virtually all of it. That show went from being very funny to terrible very quickly.

Why is he such hot shit? He must be banging Lorne, is the only thing I can figure.

I feel that way about most SNL skits/ performers since 2000. The show really seems to be good for middle school aged to high school aged viewers. So I don't usually count that towards performance capability.

Like you, I dont see much from his performance anywhere else. Maybe he'll pull through with the right project and do well like Eddie Murphy, Bill Mirray, Will Ferrell (?), Ben Stiller, Adam Sandler, Mike Myers, or Dan Ackroyd. But, considering how many other performers tried the same thing... it's a bit of a long shot. I assume hell be more like a Cheri Oteri or Chris Kattan.

You're don't like Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, Kristin Wiig, Amy Poehler? I think the silver age of the 90s continued through at least 2010 with the likes of those.

reply

Nope. As good as they are as performers, I didn't continue watching. I think it's an age thing. After high school, SNL isn't as much fun. I remember them from after SNL and not from when they were on.

The Skeleton Twins with Bill Hader and Kristin Wiig is a great movie. They were either just off SNL or in their final seasons. I highly recommend it.

reply

Thanks for the recommendation.

Have you seen ‘Documentary Now’ with Fred Armisen and Bill Hader? It;s on Netflix and it’s great stuff. I don’t like Pete Davidson and it annoys me that people think he’s funny and I just don’t understand. Bill Hader is great though.

reply

Yes I love Doc Now.

What's your favorite one, I think mine is the Globe Salesmen lol or the First one, can't remember the title but the New England house with mother & Daughter.

reply

Hard to choose, but I think I like the "The Eye Doesn't Lie" the best, parodying The Thin Blue Line.

GREAT MOVIE...BEST SCENE USES THE SONG FROM MY FAVORITE SCENE FROM MANNEQUIN...I FEEL LIKE WATCHING IT AGAIN NOW.

I agree, The Skeleton Twins is EXCELLENT! The "Nothing can stop us now" scene was so frigging hilarious I had to rewind and re-watch it at least three times. Fantastically entertaining.
