Racist

Just heard an interview of showrunner's roundtable and the issue of diversity came up. Daniels said that on empire he will essentially only accept script's from black writers as only they can truly write and represents African Americans on screen. He further went on to state that he even had to turn down great scripts from other writers, because they were not black. To make matters worse he started aggressively demanding what is the ratio of black to white writers in the showrunners writers room. Does anyone else think this is incredibly racist? I am shocked this guy still has a career. I can only imagine the outrage that would be released if the races were reversed. And how is it any of his business what race people are in other showrunners writers room.

Is he okay with male writers writing female characters or does that only work with black people?

reply

He only referenced race. I am not sure how he feels about gender and writing. I can only hope that he would be open to it and hopefully he has or will change his view on writers and race.

Yes it’s racist. 100%.

Does he have a point though in desiring black Americans to make movies about black Americans? Of course.

This is why racism isn’t always a simple choice. I just wish more people were honest about that though and said “I’m racist because...”
