Definitely not the case in all matters for sure, but I would argue that *part* of the problem is that in this day and age of the internet, things are reported with much more speed, so fifty years ago, this probably happened, but it was over and done with so quickly that it didn't make it into print, and therefore wasn't really public knowledge. Also, another branch of the same tree, things are reported so quickly out of a desire to be first, that it might get reported without being fully vetted for accuracy.
