I think people get caught up and see him as an egomaniac or something.. but in reality he's just making entertainment. I don't think he sees himself as some incredible genius or whatever.. people assume every good director is an egomaniac.

Hmmm... Maybe for you but this is definitely not a popular opinion. I love Wes Anderson but to most people I know his movies are "weird and without any sense". I don't agree, I think his movies are subtle, original and highly artistic.
But... I agree with OP, when it comes to entertainment I'd say Tarantino is the king.
I agree he is very entertaining and does make movies primarily as entertainment and isn't going for weighty themes or anything prestigious.
But if you don't think he has a huge ego or thinks of himself as a genius then you need to hear more of his interviews. He says himself that he wants to be considered one of the best directors of all time. And just says really cocky things almost every time he opens his mouth. He has a massive ego, but he does back it up with his writing.
