What Spielberg said about superhero movies going "the way of the western

I know it's a little old but -

Is it weird that I'm actually waiting for the day that the superhero movie craze burns out & is replaced by something else? I like superheroes, always have, I enjoy comics, I've enjoyed at least some of the superhero films that have been coming out for over a decade now, but it's starting to feel like overkill, along with Hollywood's general over-reliance on franchise power.

It's not that I've come to hate the superhero film, I just think it needs a break.

Superhero movies tend to be popular when either the economy's not massively strong or there's been some big terrorist incident and people want to see a safer form of one.

Explains the very creation of many cartoon characters / comic books in the Great Depression meets WW2 1930s.

Explains why relatively steady, upbeat mid 80s had some of the greatest 'stuff' eg The Goonies, Labyrinth.

He's right. Not only is the superhero trend a total fad, but there's going to be so many of them that flop eventually that it's going to cause the studio system to change drastically.

And make more risky movies?

reply

Mr. Spielberg is right.
I'm completely sick of superhero movies. It oversaturated Hollywood.

reply

What can replace superhero movies?

Nothing.

reply

Lesbian action movies.

Westerns took something like 50 or 60 years to fizzle out. Not sure what he's on about.

It’s high time for high-quality dramas to make a comeback. I watched the Robert Zemeckis movie Flight not too long ago and thought about how big-budget exciting drama movies like that aren’t made anymore. Movies like The Social Network seem to have disappeared as well.

I agree 100%
