What the Hell Happened to Elisabeth Shue?

Elisabeth Shue was the girl friend to the Karate Kid and Marty McFly. She had babysitting adventures and cocktails with Tom Cruise. In the 90s, she was an Academy Award nominee for Leaving Las Vegas, but then she disappeared from the spotlight until recently.

What the hell happened?

Elisabeth Shue after Leaving Las Vegas. She did all those teeny bopper movies and made a successful transition to a critically acclaimed, awards-bait film, and then practically nada (rather, her credits since roughly 2000 have all been in voice work, TV and/or very small, independent films where she had a limited role).

Maybe Harvey had something to do with it. Leaving Las Vegas came out in 95, so the timing would have been right for that kind of career-destroying encounter.

Director Mike Figgis interviewed her for a book called Projections 10 where she said: "I’ve always been fascinated with how some actresses do become successful so quickly. For me it was definitely a thirteen year process. I definitely wasn’t on my knees. Maybe it would have got me here much quicker. It was something that I heard about when I was younger – Beware of the casting couch. It never happened to me. But I think a lot of women do learn how to seduce, in a way, in order to get certain roles that are beyond their talent. As an actress or an actor, in some ways you are a prostitute, selling yourself, seducing people and hoping they’ll hire you. Five times a week you’re coming in and putting yourself on display. You have to be a good actor, but there’s also a level of seduction – which I didn’t get, and I think that’s why it took me so long. Women are definitely more vulnerable in wanting to please, wanting to be liked, wanting to be daddy’s little girl."
