What the Hell Happened to Molly Ringwald?

http://lebeauleblog.com/2013/01/20/what-the-hell-happened-to-molly-rin gwald/

Molly Ringwald defined a specific period in pop culture history. She didn’t win a lot of awards or work with a lot of legendary directors and co-stars. But Ringwald’s cultural impact was far greater than her filmography would suggest. If you were in high school in the early-to-mid eighties, Molly Ringwald was IT. There was Ringwald and there was everyone else.

But just a few short years after appearing on the cover of Time Magazine, the moment passed. Ringwald went from IT-girl to has-been practically overnight.

What the hell happened?

One of the reasons Molly Ringwald doesn't work much because people can't stand her. I remember she did an off-Broadway play about 16 yrs ago w/ Jason Biggs and Craig Bierko and the entire cast and crew hated her. They celebrated when she left the cast.

WTF Happened to Molly Ringwald?

Molly Ringwald was the queen of eighties teen movies. Her films with John Hughes, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Pretty in Pink have all stood the test of time and are just as believed by audiences in 2023 as they were nearly forty years ago. But, despite being one of the biggest names of the decade, Ringwald found herself typecast for many years, with more adult roles in movies like Fresh Horses and The Pick-Up Artist falling flat. She also, notoriously, turned down the lead in Pretty Woman, the movie which made Julia Roberts a household name.

In the nineties, Ringwald struggled to break free of the Brat Pack label, even if she was never actually a part of that clique, but eventually embraced her place in the pop culture with a well-received cameo in Not Another Teen Movie (which people forget starred Chris Evans). More recently, Ringwald has developed some deep misgivings about her films with Hughes, particularly Sixteen Candles, but also had gotten some of the best roles of her adult career in series such as Monster - The Jeffrey Dahmer Story and more. In this episode of WTF Happened to This Celebrity, we take a look at the various ups and downs in Molly Ringwald’s career and celebrate her most famous and enduring roles.

Do you believe Molly Ringwald's movies with John Hughes have truly endured over time?

None of the Brat Pack actors (except Demi Moore) had notable careers post 80’s or early 90’s. She was known for playing girl next door characters and aged out. Her topless scene in Malicious was probably an attempt to break that image.

She also turned down the role in Pretty Woman which may or may not have been a hit with her in it. Side note Ally Sheedy turned down McGillis” role in Top Gun.
