Demi Moore and Meg Ryan's careers.

Demi used her sex appeal for stardom (boobs and toned body)
Meg Ryan's was her girl next door image and girlish looks.

to her credit Meg DID try and break free from that image ( In The Cut)
but the public wasn't having any of it. they would not allow Meg to "grow up"
into mature roles, some can, some can't.

Demi as much as I like her, refuses to be an older woman and be seen in such a way . Demi's insecurity of growling older gets the better of her every time!
opinions vary on her acting ability. I think she can act pretty good if she plays her own range of age and such. how much of her "trouble" is of her own making?
hanging with guys and gals decades younger than her and partying like a girl in her 20's!!

Maybe a break from the limelight would do her good and she can figure put what she wants or can do next and make a comeback accordingly at a later time.

Meg Ryan hasn't acted in a film since 2009, so she may have gave it up.
since the public didn't take to her "grown up roles" before you all say it's due to her plastic surgery (and some is no doubt) remember when she did TRY and move on with "In the cut".
either way BOTH women have had a good run in the industry and are wealthy.
Meg did seem to move on and has stayed out of the limelight for the most part now.

Maybe Demi should give it a whirl.

But while you were sleeping was a big hit[these kinda movies always are] and would have boosted her career further. She was in no need for cash, had she bided her time better good scripts would have kept coming as would have the big pay cheques but after striptease she was no longer bankable nor respected by audiences. Also no you are in the minority[in fact the first person I ever heard of] to blame her career downfall on her break, it's pretty much common knowledge that striptease killed her career. Think about it, what other a list actress with half a brain would have starred in a cheap film like striptease then or now?? She should have known better.

Plus yes 1 very bad movie can do irreparable damage in certain cases to a career especially if the film becomes very famous for the wrong reasons and makes the actor look a fool. Think of how waterworld killed kevin Costner's career or mommie dearest killed faye dunaway's career[she even admitted it herself]. Sometimes the role that makes an actor famous can at the same time kill their career-Sharon stone being a prime example. While basic instinct[a role many actresses turned down] was a massive hit , it still was done in very bad taste[even stone admits this] and turned people off her and the majority of her films since that have flopped badly.

Did Gone Girl ruin Rosamund Pike's career? I suppose Pike has never achieved the household name success of Moore and Ryan but Gone Girl certainly has that Bad Girl vibe that might stick with an actor.

Jack Reacher could have done wonders for her.
