Luck of the draw.
He was a big star from 1987 to 1993...and he won a Best Director Oscar for his Best Picture winner, Dances with Wolves.
Then, one(Wyatt Earp), two(Waterworld), three(The Postman) expensive flops removed him for the A li and bankability.
No matter, that particularly early run kept his name alive for decades and Yellowstone brought him all the way back.
That's one reason we follow movie star careers...they go up, they go down, they come back again.
Proof of the arbitrary nature of life.
I dunno. He's been consistently in movies since the early 80s up until today as far as my sphere of awareness is concerned.
He's never stopped working. But for some reason none of his 00s movies dig big business.
