I suspect that dickwad wanted to get down to the wreck in record time to make a good impression, and that's why that particular trip was the fatal I never. There's a lot of precise gas and pressure issues involved in diving, even for a low-level SCUBA diver as i used to be, I should think that deep-sea diving is far more complex.
