Changing cover/poster art for rereleases of old movies.

I'm even seeing it with some all time great posters. Rosemary's Baby's poster is brilliant, really captured the at times nightmarish, paranoid atmosphere of the movie, but they changed it to something bland and modern. For Aliens recent 4k release they just used a still from the movie and touched it up.

I suppose they do this to make the packaging more modern, but most modern poster art sucks.

Counterpoint: What's stopping you from printing out your own custom covers or poster images for re-releases?

If you're looking to redesign Psycho (1998), what better starting point than Vince Vaughn's mugshot?

I'd need a high quality color printer.

I've seen pictures of custom cover art done in different styles, like old VHS covers, that people have come up with. I don't really have a knack for that sort of thing, though.

I have done this for many of my DVDs and Blu-rays. 👍

They look like shit run over twice. All these 4k covers instead of the classic theatrical posters that I remember seeing in the cinema lobby when they first came out.

DVDs started all this crap new artwork. VHS generally stuck to the theatrical poster art, iirc.
