Special effects pioneer and make up innovator Savini toiled over how to make the shotgun blast to the head through a car window look realistic in director William Lustig's Maniac. It shocked me and seemed pretty damned real!

Many years later Nicholas Winding Refn contacted Gaspar Noe for advice on how to film a head smashing scene. Refn was directing Drive with Ryan Gosling and needed practical effects advice from Noe because Noe had convincingly shot an infamous skull cracker scene in Irreversible.

Practical effects are always way better imo.
I also appreciate how so many of these guys help each other out with no sense of competition. That's pretty professional.
