Chernobyl Tours

The area around the Chernobyl nuclear disaster is NOT safe. There still a ton of radiation that can make you sterile. I don't understand why anybody would travel there intentionally. To get a glow to their skin ? I hope more stupid people travel there to sterile themselves and their children.

reply

It worries me, because EVERY fucking travel TV show has to send their hosts there to cluck over the destruction and danger, and no documentary about visiting Russia or nuclear energy is complete without a visit.

Which is no danger to the tourists and TV travel hosts, because a short visit is probably safer than getting an xray at the doctor's, but what about their guides? Are there guides who make a living by taking tourists there all day every day frying their organs and DNA through overexposure? Are they courting cancer, sacrificing years of their lives to make a buck?

It's like Everest, a wholly toxic tourist industry, one that puts the poorest people in the most danger. And unlike Everest, it's quite literally a *toxic* industry!

reply

I was just thinking about that aspect this morning. They probably get the poorest people and make them into guides. If you're dirt poor, you can't say no to money.

Regarding Everest, it costs something like $30k to make the attempt.

reply

More like $50-100K these days, and for that money the guiding companies have hired Sherpas to go up and shove some of the corpses further away from the trail.

But Everest is still dotted with frozen human poop as well as corpses, because there's so little flat space that everyone has to poop near the trail or the tents.

reply

Eww, I guess there's no brooms in Tibet.

reply

Brooms don't work on things that are frozen solid.

Or which are soft and squishy, for that matter.

reply

Well the other one, the metal one. Ah a Rake !

reply

Well, if you're talking Everest, what you want is an icepick!

And a face shield, if you're going to use the ice pick.

reply

How many bombs did they detonate in Nevada?

I'm sure it's fine. Mostly. Sort of.

reply

The people that travel there say they feel tingly or even sick for about a day.

reply

i doubt anyone is visiting ukraine these days

reply

Hopefully, Putin dies soon.

reply

I would go just for the sterility part.
