NBA thread….down the stretch here in 2023 **Update, 2-5** Irving traded to Mavs

I’d do this at the sports board here at MovieSpat but not a lot a traffic at that particular board….

Chatting with BillHicksFan made me think of starting this thread. Join with your thoughts roundball fans…

I think it’s a three team race in the East: Boston, Milwaukee, Brooklyn- four if you want to include Miami (Philly has its moments with Embiid, but will the BillHicksFan-ire-inducing James Harden show out for the playoffs after years of disappointment?)

The West is a little more wide open; I honestly think about five to seven teams could make a run, but I have to see teams round into shape and get guys back into the rotation. Denver looks good; Sacto a bit of surprise but I think falters down the stretch; Clippers, who knows, with the Leonard and PG3 situations; Grizz and Pelicans may be too young; the Suns are talented but missing something (the disgruntled Jae Crowder maybe, who they sent home for talking shyt and whom they’re still trying to actively deal); Doncic is awesome but can he carry a light-on-talent Mavs team; can’t count out heart of a champion GSW, though I think they come up short because the West is deeeeeep….and no mention of the Lakers, who can be fun to watch and are showing some heart but really don’t have a shot with sketchy outside shooting, guys in and out and Davis’ continued injuries woes (they’re a longshot with him)

Yeah, load management is the new trend and all the rage even though it sounds like a term you’d hear in the San Fernando Valley porn industry. But fans know it as aging veterans and dudes coming off injuries taking a night off here and there for preservation and freshness in the long term and playoff time.

My opinion: cats like Michael Jordan, the late Kobe Bryant and hell, even the ever defiantly mercurial “Big Ticket” Kevin Garnett; try telling them to sit for the sake of load management- I have a feeling all three would have two words for you, and I’m pretty sure those two words wouldn’t be “Merry Christmas”…..killers those three…..

P.s. - don’t worry Uncle Shogie, your Knicks may sneak in and possibly avoid the play-in game; NYK the sixth seed as we speak…..

Salud!

***EDIT*** 2-5-23 525EST:
Nets trade Kyrie Irving and Markieff Morris to Mavericks in exchange for Dorian Finney-Smith, Spencer Dinwiddie, an unprotected 2029 first-round pick and second-round picks in 27 and 29.

Lakers showing heart, but the roster mish-mash and Davis’ woes give them virtually no shot despite LBJ’s exploits and still playing at a high level….still like to see him get back on D, but he’s pacing himself and saving up for the playoffs….but it may be a Jim Mora-like exclamation in Lakerland: “Playoffs?….playoffs?….you kidding me?….”

Great idea!

I've been watching the NBA (I watch nothing else, not even college/overseas ball) since the late 80s, and it's a MUCH different game. 3's were exciting then because an entire team shot 5 of them. Everyone says it's a copy-cat league, then why don't more guys shoot mid-rangers? Seems to work just great for KD, Kahwi, Butler, Bradley Beal, and many others, and it's always there, since teams try to run guys off the 3-pt line, and protect the rim. In a few years, a guy like Rip Hamilton will be necessary; and every team might need one.

Right now, defensive schemes are a joke, and most just switch all game. Oddly enough, the offense doesn't take advantage when they have a guy 8 inches shorter in the paint, and will usually kick it out for a 3.. Down by 1 pt with a few seconds left, brick a 3. I see it every game. I pay extra for NBA TV, and just like TNT, I sometimes FF the game just to hear the talk from Isiah Thomas, Charles Barkley, Sam Mitchell, Hubie Brown, and my favorite brothers on TV -- The Van Gundy's; Jeff and Stan, who said publicly that David Stern stopped ESPN from hiring him. Jeff is hilarious, but I can't watch the game, but I should start playing it in the morning, so I can listen to it while I brush my teeth, put my contacts in, etc..

Boston, Milwaukee are the best teams. I really like the changes Adam Silver has made. The play-in, lottery reform, but I think it's time to change the playoff seeding. The Finals should have the best match-up. In the West last year, it was Dallas and GS, simply because Phoenix lost Game 7 on their homecourt badly, being down by 50 by the 2nd quarter. CP3 isn't getting any younger, and I'd love my Pistons to get a guy like Mikal Bridges.

Load management doesn't seem to help. Guys are injured all the time. Many for the entire year, including last year's #1 pick - Cade Cunningham.

Next month is the trade deadline, which is my favorite day of the year. Just to hear trade after trade. Speaking of, all the guy--

I know I talk a lot, but the character count really needs to be increased. I'll make another post.

I don't know who is worse, Magic Johnson or Rob Pelinka. At least trading half your team for AD brought a title, but giving up Ingraham (who is almost a KD clone, still very young), Lonzo Ball, a great (but injured) point guard who is a great defender, the best chest-passer in the league, and outside of Kevin Love, the best outlet passer. Fundamentally sound. Good guy, quiet, does whatever is asked of him. I always tell people that if a guy plays great defense, I want him on my team. "He can't shoot" - well, if he works that hard on D, he'll work hard to improve any areas he's not great in, and sure enough, Lonzo Ball was #2 in 3-pt shooting last year I believe.

But then for Pelinka to trade half their team for Westbrook, who NEVER fit. He will never win a title being the best player on his team. He could take a team of "scrubs" to the playoffs and lose in the 1st round ever year simply for playing hard. He hasn't played hard for the Lakers when I watch. I watch "Gametime", and they go "coast to coast", and on a few plays, Russ didn't even attempt to get back on defense. On a few others, he just stood around arguing with the refs without many words, so he kept going on... Darvin Ham had the guts to have him play on the bench, and it's obvious it works. I think Darvin Ham would have made a great coach post-Lebron, but their front office must be retarded. They don't wanna give up a 1st round? They're not going to do a damn thing when Lebron retires. They say they only care about titles - well hello Jeannie Buss!

I love Giannis, Luka, and Jokic. They don't take games off, and they make their teammates better. Good guys. Last 3 MVPs were outside of the US, and Embiid was runner-up last year, and Doncic will win it one year, if they ever give him help. Funny story about a fan-made mural if you're interested.

Getting Pat Bev was the only good move. He's made the playoffs in every single year he's been in the league, and he plays like it. I like watching him, but haven

Lots to unpack here, don’t worry about too much talk, BH, it’s the NBA so I’m like you, no prob.

I’ll go graph to graph with your stuff, and go until I get tired, lol….I might tap out but I’ll be back.

-yep, Rip Hamilton averaged 20 for many seasons with nothing more than a mid-range game and his ability to move constantly in an attempt to get open. Demar DeRozan is that guy now, though he can create his own shot better than Hamilton. Jimmy Butler can shoot the 3 but not consistently so the mid range is where his offense is best; but Butler is a player, you can run your offense with him and he plays D, and he ain’t afraid to challenge anybody in the paint; just a solid all-around player. Durant, Leonard, Beal: all those guys can shoot the 3 but know when to step in for the easier, makeable 2, and they can create their own shot; Durant and Kawhi at an elite level; Beal at a very high above average levels- Beal is a sharpshooter too and capable passer, Durant is a good passer and Kawhi, at best, a very average distributor. Those three guys and a few others are exceptions. Many guys who shoot 3s are specialists; that’s all they can do. Some are what they call 3-and-D guys, but that seems to be dwindling too. Also, it can be frustrating when a 7-footer just shoots 3s; that’s partially to blame on how they came up, coaches let them do what they want because at 7 feet, if you have a modicum of ability, you’ll at least get a look and possibly a NBA roster spot. Post games and footwork like Olajuwon or David Robinson- it sucks but so many guys don’t learn good footwork. Jokic and Embiid, that’s why they”re All-NBA stalwarts, well-rounded games (along with 3-point shot, mind you) with excellent footwork. DeMarcus Cousins, a hothead no doubt, a good post game and footwork with an outside shot. But he’s out of the league after some injury issues. We spoke of this before: as a result of D’Antoni’s offensive influence over the league, spacing and quick shots are accepted, though the Warriors can run the offense for much of the shot clock and still get a good look because of spacing and movement- and, admittedly, it helps to have two of the greatest shooters the NBA has ever seen.

I agree with what you observe here, but respectfully, I’m not as bothered by it because every team has incorporated some of D’Antoni’s philosophy. But yeah, some guys should accept that 3s aren’t always the answer. But the mentality is hard to bust. Guys want to get paid and get their numbers. You would think offensive versatility would be a good thing. But dudes come in and have their priorities out of whack, and sometimes, it poisons their team and messes with the flow of an offense. I say it too when watching a game: “Step in, make it an easier 2”; or when a defense adjusts and they run you off the line I’m like “pump fake , get your feet right and blow past him.” I know, it’s frustrating when they settle for the lower percentage shot. And the footwork and a fake or when you bring the ball down- I know you’ve noticed refs call more travels this year than in the past. If players had the fundamentals of solid footwork down, that wouldnt be happening but, here we are, a game where 3s are encouraged and rewarded.

Re: your Laker take

Sure , Los Angeles’ blue-blood marquee team shows a sliver of light here and there but I’m thinking the beam to this Lake Show dimmers and before you know it, dark times loom.

Not only Davis, but the solid and run and gun flier Lonnie Walker, along with undrafted find Austin Reaves and others solid rotation players missing a game or two; the Lakers have been unable to field a team necessary to compete night in, night out. But nobody, no one, no time, nowhere will ever feel sorry for the Lakers, nor should they receive pity. As you mentioned, front office decisions along with its deference to James’ whims will probably result in a not-so-distant bleak future. I think, just my opinion, that now is not even the worst of it. At least now, LA has assets, although some good assets are depreciating (Lebron, AD); others marginal (PatBev on a short deal, Westbrook’s expiring MAX contract, Thomas Bryant); and others for the future (Reaves, Gabriel, and a middling first round pick). But James is at the point of where anything he gives, which undoubtedly is a lot , can be the end of what he gives. AD, ballin’ before the foot injury, can get hurt just picking up the banana peel before he even has the chance to slip on it. The team has shown heart in recent weeks, winning some and losing a few close ones (Mavs in OT, Sacto last night), but it’ll take much more than just trying hard.

I don’t like calling for heads, but your point about the front office has merit. Despite James’ input and passive/aggressive statements, Pelinka probably on the chopping block. He didn’t have to listen to Lebron (remember, management wanted and could’ve had DeRozan- LBJ wanted Russ). Along with the inclusion of Pope and Kuzma in the Westbrook deal, and the astronomical price paid for Davis (you mentioned them, Ingram and Ball, but also solid contributor Josh Hart, the rights to De’Andre Hunter AND TWO future first rounds picks)- basketball heads are shaking those noggins., Now, was it worth it? A championship victory says “yes.” But that was a helluva steep price.

Point being, these are the type of deals that look good when it happens , and it did cash early dividends, but when the bank calls for its notes later on, and the wallet is bare— that’s when the guy at the head of this starts thinking about where to vacation for the upcoming summer.

I think the Los Angeles Lakers are screwed and the shyt gets worse if short-sighted decision-making and bad luck aren’t avoided. Lebron James MUST play at this exact level the next two seasons, minimum. And Anthony Davis….I’m thinking become the Man of Steel (Clark Kent or Shaq, not Dwight Howard). And hit on the draft picks your team kept by not dumping Westbrook. Do those things and maybe hope stays alive. If not, oh well, shyt happens. But don’t worry, at least the arena is full.

Monday morning quarterbacking, well yeah, likely. These basketball literary dumpings are long because two NBA nuts like us will spec on anything in this game. Keep it going. Trade deadline always interesting. Is Jerami Grant still on his perennial journey to the top of Trade Rumor Mountain/Volcano?

I don't remember any good sources about Lebron wanting Russ. Lebron is such a smart basketball player, and needs the ball in his hands - he's a point guard who is big. Russ isn't a shooter and never has been and so I can't imagine Lebron knowing less than I. Russ needs the ball in his hand, but he's just too inefficient. He fought Steven Adams for rebounds, but 99% of the time, guys just let Russ get them. The game is too stat-oriented, and I've explained (on sports sites) how they're misleading. There's one, a +/-, but if you are a shitty player on a great team surrounded by starters, the numbers should look good, much better if that player is demoted to the bench a week later... Character.. Hustle - which seems to rub off on other guys, especially when a veteran picks up a player who is hot 94-feet, or on the floor; the young guys can't just stand and watch. It works the other way. Notice when a team is struggling in the 1st half with FT's, at the end of the game, they ALL seem to have problems. It's psychological of course, probably expecting to miss. I remember Ben Wallace would make 20 straight FT's and 3's, but there was no pressure then, which is why they get the big bucks.

I don't care about the Lakers, but I do miss the playoffs (and The Finals) without Lebron James. I think when he retires, they'll be in a reasonable position -- young players, young coaches, and the money to sign free agents, and you don't have to do too much arm-twisting.

I'd love to see Memphis and Denver play the WCF, and Milwaukee and Boston in the ECF... I just want every team to be as healthy as possible, so there's none of that, "If ______ was healthy, we would have won" which is valid, which is why I want teams at full strength - for competition's sake.

The Brooklyn game was on TNT last night.. Claxton doesn't know the fucking rules. Unbelievable. As Reggie Miller wisely said, "Just shoot the free throws normally, you'll miss anyway" and this has happened at least three times, all resulting in lane violations - all winnable games.

Do you remember the Kings offense from the early 2000s? THAT was nice to watch. Or Detroit and San Antonio's defensive battles. But the 3-pt shooting is boring. I love early games, and have a friend from Chicago, but my mind was elsewhere, because Detroit was down double-digits within minutes for the entire game.

Early shot fired on the Trade Front:

Lakers deal G Kendrick Nunn and three second round picks to Washington for F Rui Hachimura

—that’s a lot of former Wizards on the roster for Lakers.
—Nunn can score when he takes a break from his not-scoring ways and riding pine. Hachimura a wing defender who can hit the occasional 3.
—Lakers hate draft picks.

reply

I think the Lakers are desperate, and 2nd round picks won't develop (Pelinka isn't going to draft anyone great) until after Lebron's retirement. AD is supposed to come back soon, but I don't see Lebron ever winning another title.

reply

The Lakers ARE desperate and I’ll have more on that later. Plus, the east is heating up and Miami (without Butler) comes back for a big win over the Celtics (without Brown).

This “without” shyt is bothersome, that’s why I want the playoffs NOW….and we ain’t even at the all star break yet. Everybody wants that playoff smoke and playoff checks; the regular season, not so much. Warriors are coasting and looking at any seed 6 or better, and Milwaukee without Middleton (he’s back, for now) deprived the team of a reliable shot maker and capable shot creator. Bucks are still good, but he opens up so many other options on offense. I think many believed they get past Boston last year with him finishing the series.

Lots of trade talk with the usual suspects. Two guys I’m thinking: Bojan Bogdanovic (shooting always a need, and he can create a little) and Jae Crowder (will a contender pull the trigger for a guy who’s been on his couch all season?).

reply

As a Wolves fan, this has been a very trying season for me.

If you followed our off-season you probably already understand why.

reply

KAT appeasement so he doesn't have to play Center... AD is the same way.

reply

Kind of. KAT has always been the one vocal about not wanting to move to the 4 for whatever reason.

His problem is that he's just bad at it. He doesn't have the lower body strength, or just general grittiness to battle down there with bigger guys.

I shouldn't say he's bad. Just speaking relatively, but you know what I mean.

It sucks, because I'm not sure that power forward is his optimal position either. He's almost like a "tweener" guard as a big with strengths and weaknesses at both positions.

reply

Never thought about his size.. I always thought, "Big dude, not skinny", but yeah, he couldn't even guard 5's, so guarding 4's is going to be messy. Does Finch switch on defense every time? It killed Rudy in the Playoffs. They put him in pick and roll action, or would make him guard the corner 3 (thus leaving the paint unprotected)..

reply

I have yet to meet or talk to anyone who follows basketball who thought the Gobert acquisition was a good one. Experiments with “Twin Towers” in the past resulted in the marginal (Tyson Chandler/Eddy Curry, Bulls) to the pretty good (Hakeem Olajuwon/Ralph Sampson, Rockets), but in this “new” NBA with less reliance on the big man, why Minnesota thought this was a good idea is beyond me.

Plus, what it took to get the Frenchman. Not only 5 players but FOUR first round picks (granted, some cap fillers but 3 who I’d deem serviceable rotation players—PatBev, possibly Kessler, and Beasley if he can stay out of trouble). That’s a lot for the 30-year center; I don’t think a 25-year Gobert is worth that much capital. BillHicksFan already mentioned the switch difficulties with the 4 and 5, with KAT being the four and his indifference to defense and Gobert’s defensive prowess being neutralized by smart playoff strategy from good teams— I never saw what the T-Wolves front office envisioned here. Maybe new ownership , ARod and his money buddy, wanted to make a splash and allowed the new GM to make a splash of his own. Connelly, I think that’s his name, this is his first big move, and it could be the defining one of his tenure , good or bad, for as long as he’s there. But moves like that need to work or work is what this GM may be looking for when the shyt hits the fan (a little shyt already in the air).

But hey, at least KG-adversary Glen Taylor sold the team….

reply

I actually watched more than just the last 2 mins of the GS-Nets game... It was a very good game, but it would be nice if teams were at full strength. So much for load management.

2-3 weeks until the Trade Deadline!

reply

Kyrie, another ball dominant point guard? I think Cuban is buying time. I don't know why he doesn't "buy" players who actually fit, and not another headache. Durant, Kyrie, Simmons, and Harden ALL made at least one trade request in the last 10 months. Dallas gave up Finney-Smith, Dinwiddie, and 3 picks.. Possibly for a rental, or the max (punishment!). Unless they win, of course, although I thought going to LA would humble him playing with Lebron, who he won a title with, but there are worse places for Kyrie than Dallas.

ESPN will be showing the game at 10pm ET -- I'll be excited to see how they play together.
