Afraid of going to the police? Or simply not reporting someone out of forgiveness and kindness of one's own heart?

Regardless of the matter, serious or not, and regardless of the type of crime, I sometimes can't help but wonder.

Yes, in this life, there is no doubt whatsoever that one of the reasons people may not report someone to the police is that they are simply AFRAID to do so, whether its afraid that the law won't believe them, won't jail the perpetrator, won't jail them for enough of a sentence, afraid the perp may turn on them for grassing/reporting or come back to them (remember "The Hit" (1984) film for one?) amongst other reasons.

But in some cases, it may at least PARTIALLY be true also but, I sometimes wonder, NOT saying its "right" of course but, whatever the matter is, and whatever harsh or otherwise less than favourable reality IS attached to it, including SOCIAL flaws (I know, I know!), whether the main reason people may CHOOSE not to report someone to the police is because they may forgive that person and do so out of the kindness of their own heart? Or feel its not important ENOUGH for that person to go to jail/prison or even a mental ward etc. In life, men, women, children, whoever, how many people do THAT? And they don't exact vengeance either, and not JUST because it is illegal and whatnot. WHAT by the way would that scenario come across in life IF there were NO laws or say laws in their official form, which by the way were ALSO created by HUMANS, ceased their existence at least for a time period ala "The Purge"?

(By the way, to those who saw Abel Ferrara's "Bad Lieutenant" (1992) - do you think the nun has forgiven them because she was afraid? Or out of the kindness of her heart? Or even, if it even is possible, somewhere in BETWEEN?)

And again, who ultimately IS right or wrong here, if at all? And is there a healthy in between balance here? And can we debate and discuss such matters without necessarily succumbing to anger, disgust and uses of f and s etc words even if OK if some can't help it, they can, in an its not forbidden but not actively encouraged in the name of taste and maturity sort of way?

And is it also normal that sometimes we may treat different people, men, women or even say first time and not first time offenders, differently, by law and morality, even IF we still don't say they should get away with it, other incidental nuances and mentalities and "cultures" notwithstanding, as decent and as civilized beings are concerned, ignorant folks and the lot NOT counting?

Cheers.

P.S. Yes, I know, I STILL feel and think about matters like this in very similar fashion, cannot help it mate!
