I didn't see that ending for "Loneliness......", but it made sense after. He wasn't going to sell-out, and join The Establishment just because there was a carrot for him. Especially since they had been screwing with him, until they found a way to use him (beating the other school) and he wasn't going to be used. Winning the race is very symbolic, and he mentions earlier that he (quoting his dying father) that he waits for the day when the workers get a piece of the pie.
Knife In The Water" was another unique movie, full of tension. I think the older man saw a bit of himself in the younger man, and wanted to show off in front of his woman.
I never saw "The Longest Day", but I do have Mitchum on automatic record.
