I looked at the Criterion Channel, and they don't have a lot of the sort of lighter fare I like. Not a lot of musicals from the classic era, or Cary Grant films. They really seem to believe that dramas are the only genre worth presenting.
Yeah, TCM has all the fluff I like, but in order to get it, I have to sign up for one of the big streaming services, which I've put off doing as that means paying for all sorts of crap channels I don't want (like sports).
It's a shame you can't just buy a monthly subscription to TCM, I'd pay for one.
Where i'm at my cable company has an option to stream my choice of 10 channels rather than have cable for about half of the cost of cable. A monthly subscription to TCM alone would be nice.
criterion has a lot of fun stuff on it - i'm actually watching the demy musical 'youg girls of rochefort' as i type. & they've got lots of neat things like rarely seen noir stuff.
true, they do have a lot of that sniffy, prestige stuff, the heavy dramas and foreign films. but they've got lots and lots of fun things too. every time i'm at a loss for something to watch, my best bet is to go to their site & go to their noir section, or musical or whatever, and pick something at random. 95% of the time, i'll find something i've never heard of, and i almost always have a good time.
I recently installed a vpn as every time I thought of an old film or series I'd like to rewatch, it was only available outside my country. Now I can watch anything I want pretty much. They range from about $4-$10 USD p/m.
I installed windscribe as you get 10 gb free p/m. But once i started watching a series I didn't want to wait for a month for my next 10gig so I subscribed. It's £8 p/m UK.
