What did you watch this week potatoe? (05/16-05/22)

Hi!

All the money in the world (2017 TV): Another one of my many mini-quests is to watch all the movies Scott directed. I’d say im about 80% done. Now I can say I watched his last drop. And it was a dope drop. I would’t say a deep drop, but it was clean and never convoluted. A nice Hollywood rendering of a true story. My rating: 7.5/10

Enemy (2015 TV): Definitely a beautiful vibey WTF movie. The last scene made me laugh and had to read after to really understand the concept. Loved the cinematography, acting and soundtrack. Didn’t care much for the story and the concept. Now there’s only one movie from Denis Villeneuve I haven’t seen and it’s his first one from 1998 so fuck it, I celebrate having watch 99% of his collection and will make a post about it soon. My rating: 7/10

Benyn & Joon(1993 TV): I always thought Benny was Depp but no, it's the very impresive Aidan Quinn. I love this type of movie where people just go about their daily lives with nothing too extraordinary going on but where every single detail is important and beautifully shot. It’s seems like it’s random. Things are just happening. The movie has a life if it’s own, it’s a parallel universe that doesn’t exist. Oh don’t give me that look you know exactly what I mean. It was a very joyful experience. My rating: 8/10

Enemy was weird. 6.5/10

All the Money in the World - might have been better with Spacey 6/10

The Boy in the Striped Pajamas (2008) - I twist on the Holocaust. The ending is devastating but I had trouble feeling sorry for the parents. 7.5/10

Sleepers (1996) - Somewhat contrived in places but there some great scenes and performances especially from Bacon. 7/10

Duel in the Sun (1946) - A movie I put off for years because of the reputation and I do love westerns. The whole thing was one big miscast starting with Jennifer Jones. Peck and Cotten should have been switched. The Sam Pierce character was not needed. 5.5/10

His House (2020) - Good premise but just not scary enough. The ending is interesting as you don't usually see a spirit/ghost/witch physically killed. 6/10

Sleepers: haunted me when I saw it as a teen. 8.5/10

Dead Man Down 2013 7/10. Colin Farrell A very good, well acted thriller. Victor, a rising gangland player, has infiltrated a crime lords organization. Victor watches, and is watched by Beatrice, a mysterious young woman who lives in the apartment across from his.

Agatha and the Truth of Murder (2018) 7/10. If you like Agatha Christie mysteries, you'll like this. Good acting, good mystery.

My week
Stay Out of the F**King Attic (2020) 6/10 I thought this was decent. For a b movie it was well acted and it didn't feel cheap. It could have been shorter and it would have worked better, but I did think it was a lot better than most of the reviews.

Horror in the High Desert (2021) 7/10 This one surprised me as I knew nothing about it. I liked it because it was like watching an episode of Unsolved Mysteries. Because it was a faux documentary , the found footage was minimal. I did find the ending disappointing, but overall a nice concept.

The Lost Footage of Leah Sullivan (2018) 3.8/10 I like found footage movies, I think that's obvious, and I watched this one as it had a decent reviews. I don't know what the good reviews saw that I didn't, but I found this one tedious, and grating. I would not recommend.

Dream Lover (1993) 6.3/10 I am really surprised that I hadn't seen this one before. I have such a crush on Mädchen Amick, so I did enjoy this. It is a predictable, run of the mill, early 90s romantic thriller, but it's well done. James Spader is always interesting. I don't know if I would ever revisit this, but I'm glad I saw it.

Darkness Falls (2003) 6/10 I feel like I'm being generous here, but it's not that bad of a film. The effects are a little drab, but I found most early 2000s horror to be a little drab so this fits in. It could have been better, but it's not the worst.

Asylum Blackout (2011) 7.4/10 I'd seen this one before and I really like it. I think it has great atmosphere and none of the characters act stupidly. I will add that Rupert Evans is a bonus. I cared about the characters. My only complaint is that they threw in a twist where I'm not sure the film needed one. Nice gore, but not over the top.

The Furies (2019) 7.2/10 I knew nothing about this one either going into it and I was pleasantly surprised. It's a mash up of so many different different movies , but it works. there is some good violence and gore, but the story was a little intriguing as well. Although the concept was far from original, I enjoyed it.

Area 407 (2012) 4/10 Another found footage movie, which I had seen before but didn't know it. This one had potential, but it would have been better not as a found footage film. The running and screaming was just tiresome.

The Dyatlov Pass Incident (2013) 6.9/10 You guessed it, found footage. I knew I'd seen this one before and watched it again because I liked it. It's well done and although it has nothing to do with the real incident, I found it interesting. It does go off the rails near the end, but for most of the movie it's pretty good.

Crowsnest (2012) 4/10 I wasn't going to watch another FF film this week, but it was Canadian and I thought it might have actually had something to do with the Crowsnest pass. Spoilers, it didn't. Mash up of Jeepers Creepers/wrong turn/rest stop it just didn't really work for me.

Martyrs (2015) 5/10 This one came up in conversation and I thought maybe it deserved another go. It's not a bad movie, it's just that if you've seen the original, this one lacks it's soul. It's less violent and gory, but it just missed out on the dread, and the feeling that stays with you after you watch it.

Good stuff, good stuff. I’m proud of you.

Blackout asylum looks right down my alley.

I just watched the trailer for The furies and now ai really want to see it. The bad guys look sick.

reply

Asylum Blackout/The Incident is on the IFC channel through Prime Canada right now. I got the free trial just so I could see it again. I say give it a go.

The More The Merrier, a funny 1943 comedy about the housing (and man) shortage in Washington in 1943. It stars Joel McCrea, Jean Arthur and Charles Coburn. 7.5/10.

It was remade in 1966 as Walk, Don't Run with Cary Grant, Jim Hutton and Samantha Eggar. The remake was a pale copy.

I just got back Saturday from Storm Chasing in Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas, and then visiting family in Kansas
(no, not Dorothy). We saw one lousy tornado, which brings my total to 31. But we did have a great dinner
at The Big Texan Steak House in Amarillo, Texas. I had an 18 oz ribeye. Yum!

i recall being mystified by enemy, but in a very fun, pleasing way. my letterboxd account tells me i gave it a 3.5, but it was an enthusiastic 3.5. i should give it a re-watch soon. i have to catch up with prisoners one of these days.

my week:

it happened one night (1934) 3.5 i'm too embittered to appreciate this the way a well adjusted human would but i can't deny that it's a very sweet film.

the wolf house (2019) 5 i don't know anything about art or animation. someone who really understands this stuff might be able to tell you that this is incompetently made. i dunno.

but i love looking at it. goes head to toe with spider-verse and dark city for being my favourite film to gawk at.

under the silver lake (2018) 5 when that riff to inna-gadda-da-vida comes in, any doubts i have about the greatness of this slip away like a sandcastle against the tide.

predestination (2014) 3.5 you've gotta admire the audacity.
i've always believed that terrible things have more in common with great things than mediocre things.

cuz to achieve greatness, you have to be willing to make yourself look like an idiot. take chances and all that.

i'm not saying this is great. or that it makes the makers look like idiots.

but it's definitely not like everything else you've seen, & that deserves a bit of respect for sure.

circle (2015) 3 this movie is idiotic & hammy and i'm pretty certain it doesn't make sense, but it is also completely entertaining, and i never complain about being entertained.

not boring! i will put a hand up for any movie that's not boring!

blair witch project (1999) 3.5 i said some snippy things about this when i watched it about 1/2 a year or so back.

but i have to say it played much better to me tonight.

i still think it pales next to the best found footage films that have come in its wake (rec, lake mungo being the masterpieces of the style), but it has some good, creepy moments.

the hot rock (1972) 3.5 it's fun.
but maybe a bit weirdly paced?
like...the fun stuff happens in the first 2/3s. and then it sort of plods along to the end.
it's absolutely a good time. goes down easily.
but it doesn't quite pop, y'know?

if you're a fan of robert redford's hair, you are gonna be very happy.

eraserhead (1977) 5 this is the most industrial movie ever made

insidious the last key (2018) 3 not as good as the other ones, but far from terrible.

all the insidious films are pretty good imo. yeah, they all have that inky black look and jump scare/string stab stuff. but they're still fine. it's not a small thing to make 4 pretty good films. show some appreciation.

actress is very foxy.

odds against tomorrow (1958) 3.5 belafonte plays the marimbas around the 24m mark. not very adeptly, but it still makes me cheer for him. marimbas are a very under-rated instrument.

tough, grim film. a bit plodding in the middle section, but a dark ending rewards your patience.

lo and behold (2016) 3.5 herzog doc on tech & the internet age. not a peak herzog doc. a bit too all over the place. all the segments are interesting, but the cumulative effect feels like you just skipped off the surface of 6 different topics but didn't really come away with any insight gained.

back to school (1986) 3 i kinda have a hard time accepting how much taller terry farrel is than keith gordon. & they don't even try to hide it!

this is ok. moderately amusing. ambles along nicely. good kurt vonnegut joke.

the miracle of morgan's creek (1943) 4 old screwball comedies don't generally go down very easily with me, but this is quite a bit of undeniable fun.

sullivan's travels (1941) 4 to this day people get sniffy about comedies.
like they're too easy, too common.
bollocks.
there is nothing harder than making people laugh.
witness the glaring, continuous absence of genuinely entertaining comedies.
this is a good one.

veronica lake. holy cow.

annabelle comes home (2019) 3.5 the people who have collectively decided to give this a 2.6 on letterboxd must have all been pissed when they logged their ratings. this movie is actually quite good. flawed, certainly, and it has lots of the characteristics of your standard modern pg horror.

but that scene with the brunette and the old tv? great! girl wakes up with the doll? also great!

yes, there's some dodgy cgi and some less effective moments. sure. but this is a very slick, efficient, skillfully executed film, & if you don't like it you're wrong.

also, it should always be repeated that ed and lorraine warren were absolutely kooks and con artists.

rationalwiki.org/wiki/Ed_and_Lorraine_Warren

edge of the city (1957) 3.5 pretty good! man running from his past struggles to do the right thing. nothing major, but it's tight & efficient & well done all told.

the silent partner (1978) 4 kinda bonkers, has an unusually subdued but very cool elliot gould performance, lots of foxy ladies and seventies nudity, a very canadian shopping mall, and a fairly shocking bit of violence at the end.

i loved it!

reply

blair witch (2016) 3 the last 25 minutes or so is pretty interminable. endless shots of people running with shaking cameras and dark halls and blah blah blah. not too good. i'll give you that.

but the rest of this is not terrible. i was quite on board with everything that happened up to that point. and that business with the foot/body horror? disgusting!

so you can add this to the list of films the universe has declared to be awful that i think are really not so bad at all

good bye lenin! (2003) 3.5 very nice. but.

a little too long and surprisingly overwrought in a few places.

& too nice to east germany.

it's an enjoyable film, but it can't help but pale in comparison to the lives of others.

psycho goreman (2020) 3.5 this girl is as annoying as eisenberg's lex luthor.

fun movie otherwise, though.

xtro 3 (1995) 2.5 not a thing to do with the original, it seems to me.
has a few fun moments, but not enough to keep me from browsing twitter through most of the movie.
one attractive actress, a few fun terrible effects, some enjoyably hammy performances, some questionable facial hair. a mixed bag overall, and a bit dull for long stretches.

shane (1953) 4 i'm a bit western averse, but i have to say i kinda loved this. got a little misty at the end and everything. guess i'm a wimp! if it had been a little leaner & if the kid had been about 30% less annoying, it would have been perfect.

notorious (1946) 3.5 nicely & mostly efficiently told & refreshingly brief.
it has some neat twists & turns & some great moments
but i didn't find myself all that involved with it tbh.
i doubt i'll ever think about it again.

hail the conquering hero (1944) 4 a very fun, snappy good time. not a bit of fat on it.

if the actress in it was around today, she would make a fantastic goth girl.

kiss kiss bang bang (2005) 4.5 isn't it truly bizarre that shane black made this film that hums with all this crazy energy and also made that predator remake?

vampyres (1974) 3.5 harriet is the sexiest woman in this movie. far more fanciable than the two lesbian vampires.

this was one of the first dvds i bought back in the day. it had a great commentary with the director, who was wonderfully, charmingly horny even though he must have been a billion years old at the time it was recorded.

sledgehammer (1983) 3 a bit too sluggishly paced in spots for me to fully endorse, but if you like amateurish diy 80s shot on video stuff, this should make you happy.

reply

Don't forget Shane Black also wrote the best movie ever! The Monster Squad!! Haha

reply

i have never seen monster squad. should i watch it? if you say yes, i'll do it!

reply

I say yes, but....it is a kids movie and I like it because I loved when I was a kid.

reply

i'm open to trying anything. it looks fun. i'll give it a try over the weekend. thanks!

Predestination: 6/10

I started Circle once but did not get far into it. Didn’t like the acting.

Blair witch project: only saw it once when it came out and did not like it. 4/10 (strangely I saw the sequel book of shadows a few times in really really liked it)

Insidious: The final key: my situation with this franchise is complicated. This week I finally watched The conjuring which I thought was the last one I hadn’t seen but now I realize I haven’t seen this one neither. Or if I did there is no physical or mental trace of it. I plan to to a wrap-up of my ratings for each entry of this franchise. One thing I will tell you right now is I started with the very first Annabelle which I never finished because I disliked it then years later saw The conjuring 2 and fell in love with it and started to watch the rest. I shall try to watch The last Key and Annabelle: come home this week.

Always wanted to see Eraserhead.

Kiss kiss bang bang: 8/10

reply

I like Book of Shadows as well. I know a lot of people hate it, but I get that the director wanted to do something different and studio interference really messed it all up. I think people hated it because they wanted more of the same and got something completely different.

you both have talked me into watching book of shadows tonight. i'll let you know what i think in this week's thread.

Hope you enjoy. It has a IMDb rating g of 4/10, metascore 15 and rotten of 14%.

You like gothic chicks though so...

Oh and I remember I had fun finding a bunch of secret stuff they hid in the movie. They revealed them in the special features.

reply

i 100% enjoyed looking at the goth girl.
it was a silly movie, but perfectly enjoyable.
