MoviePass is finally shutting down

As reported by multiple outlets:

https://www.theverge.com/2019/9/13/20864873/moviepass-app-shutdown-out-of-business-movies-subscription

For the 8 months or so that I was a subscriber and the service worked as advertised, it was golden. I was going to the theater twice a week and doing it for only $9.99 a month! I will miss those days.

But once the troubles started, it was a total circus.

Their business model just didnt work, too many cheap bastards.........like me.

I know their plan was to build up their subscriber base very quickly and then convince the theater chains, and even nearby restaurants, to partner with them.

Instead the theaters just created their own subscription programs and said fuck MoviePass.

They are trying to beat a dead horse, there are many ways to see films without leaving your house and even without paying if that is what you wish to do.

Also as mentioned the cinemas just cut out the middle man and created their own version.

Sure, you can watch films at home but there is something to be said for the theatrical experience.

If MoviePass could've stayed at the $9.99 price point and delivered the service reliably then they'd still be super popular. I'd certainly still be a subscriber. But I was perplexed from the beginning about how the business model could be sustainable. Turns out, it wasn't.
