If they throw something at you in anger?

Depends what the person throws.

Honestly, I don't think it's ever right to push or hit someone. Violence is never the answer. But if someone throws something at you in anger, it's understandable to be angry, right?

If someone throws a knife or acid or something at you i wouldn't blame you for punching his/her lights out, it would be self defense.

You have a right to defend yourself but escalating matters is often a bad idea

Getting away from the situation, if you can, is probably more sensible
