Question About Former IMDB User Profile

I remember years back you could click on an IMDB user name and that would take you to their "profile page" where you could see the user's e-mail address along with stuff they would have entered themselves such as an avatar, signature etc. My question is did the user have to enter their e-mail address on their profile page themselves in order for it to be visible to other's, or was it automatically visible once your created your account? I tried to test this before the message boards closed down with a friend on there who I knew had a visible e-mail address; however I think IMDB changed up what was visible on profile pages, because I could not longer see it.

Automatically visible

Thanks. I don't know why they decided to change what was accessible on a person's profile, but then again look at what they did to the message boards. I wonder how this has really affected them.

Wow, that kind of is like an invasion of privacy. I mean not really, but I would have thought the reverse would have been true. It would make more sense to keep the email address hidden and allow the user to allow it to be visible.

That's what I think as well. I thought that they gave you the option of entering it in or leaving it blank, but I guess I was wrong. It's been so long I don't know if I'm remembering it correctly.

I mean, just imagine if someone was trolling on here and then they suddenly got a hold of your email address. They could spam and/or cyber bully you infinitely. I mean I guess IMDb thought that everyone on there would be professional because directors/producers and movie/show crews are most likely to use that site; however, in a general fan base, you will have those crazies.

reply

No, I rarely saw people's E-mail addresses on their IMDb-profile pages. I'm sure that you had to type in your E-mail address there (or at least grant permission) if you wanted people to see it.

The email address was definitely hidden. I was a regular on the horror board for years & used it daily often visiting peoples profiles and never once saw anyones email address

Now that makes sense. I don't know why I was so curious now, because I didn't seem to care back in the day. It would make sense that you would have to enter it yourself, because not everyone necessarily wants others to have their contact info. outside of the site.
