WINNING? Acting Navy secretary Modly quits after backlash from his criticizing captain who pleaded for coronavirus help

The Navy’s top civilian called it quits today after receiving a severe backlash on social media for ridiculing a captain whose letter pleading for help amid a coronavirus outbreak on a U.S. warship was leaked.

Secretary of the Navy Thomas Modly first apologized last night for his scathing remarks about Captain Brett Crozier, over an alarming letter by Crozier which described a worsening coronavirus outbreak aboard the warship, a temporary home to more than 4,000 crew members. More than 100 people on the ship were infected. Crozier is one of those crew members who has tested posiitve.

Today, social media was fired up with angry Americans demanding he quit or be fired. Many pointed out he had no experience to even be in the job, as he was appointed to it mainly for being a big donor to T-rump. The pressure obviously worked.

“He resigned on his own accord, putting the Navy and the sailors above self so that the USS Theodore Roosevelt, and the Navy as an institution, can move forward,” Secretary of Defense Mark Esper wrote in a Tuesday statement. “I have the deepest respect for anyone who serves our country, and who places the greater good above all else. Secretary Modly did that today, and I wish him all the best.”
