I didn't feel like listening to that but I have made several posts here about my least favorite Oscar decisions. But here are ones I just shake my head at.
Sean Connery winning for the Untouchables. I din't think he did anything that I'd call amazing in those films and he was up against superior performances like Denzel Washington in Cry Freedom and Morgan Freeman in Street Smart. I hadn't seen it but I also have heard people say Albert Brooks in Broadcast news was good and I'd believe it. I don't hate The Untouchables but when you get down to it, it really is just a typical action movie with cops as the protagonists. I enjoy it. It's entertaining but it isn't a drama film.
Jack Palance winning for City Slickers. I admit I am really ignorant of this actor since the only movies I have ever watched with him are Batman and the City Slickers movies. I didn't think his performance in City Slickers was worthy of being nominated much less winning. He's just a stereotypical old cowboy. Tommy Lee Jones in JFK and Ben Kingsley in Bugsy were both way better and more deserving of the win.
Tommy Lee Jones winning for the Fugitive. I like this movie but, come on! He's just a typical action role in this movie! He's not worthy of a Oscar nomination for it in my opinion. All the other nominees were all way better than him. Especially Ralph Fiennes in Schindler's List and Leonardo DiCaprio in What's Eating Gilbert Grape. Just dumb!
Kim Bassinger winning for L.A Confidential. She was the least interesting character in that movie and her whole performance was just that of a typical pretty woman who's made to look and sound sexy. Gloria Stuart in Titanic was way more deserving.
I agree, but it is all a popularity contest.
Why Don Ameche was even nominated for Cocoon -85', let alone won is just bonkers. There were 3 far better supporting male performances from that same film that had more depth and layers.
Marlee Matlin winning a sentimental Oscar because she was deaf instead of Sigourney Weaver for Aliens - 86, and Cher winning an undeserved Oscar for Moonstruck - 87', when the other 4 nominees gave far better and stronger performances is staggeringly bamboozling. It was a perfect opportunity to award Glenn Close here as well for a still memorable and somewhat talked about classic performance of psycho in Fatal Attraction.
Yeah. You are right. It often is about awarding a less good performance to make up for someone not getting nominated or winning for a better performance previously.
