Checking In

Hey everyone, Jim here (founder of MovieChat). How's everyone doing?

It's been a year and a half since MovieChat was created, and in that short amount of time, we've become the leading destination to discuss movies online. For our longtime members, thank you for your continued loyalty and contributions to the site; for our new members, welcome to our community!

I, along with a small team and our volunteer moderators, continue to support the site, managing and maintaining things behind the scenes, and ensuring that MovieChat continues to be the leading destination to discuss movies online. We are excited about what the future holds and look forward to many more years of movie and entertainment discussion.

I hate to say this but I think Imdb and moviechat are both owned by Amazon.

reply

Oh god.

reply

We should all thank god this site is still running. There is no money being made here. Why keep it up and running.

I did a little Googling and the "Principal Address" is physicaladdress.com. [one of those virtual mailbox places]. Marsha Siha looks to me like some service to help shield the owners of a company and keep them private.

reply

Ohhhhh, thank you!!! ♥♥♥
Means, Marsha Siha may be a kind of straw man.
Makes sense and opens up space for many conspiracy theories. 🧞‍♀️

Very interesting. Thank you!

They run advertising. They're making money.

reply

I think he's still here, but he has a lot of irons in the fire. 🔥 His main mission was to save comments from IMDb.

reply

It was the best set up for a movie and tv forum, to have a page for everything rather than the usual boards where there is just heaps of threads getting lost over time.

reply

I agree. Although I was just a lurker on IMDb, I'm glad Jim was able to save the posts.

reply

There were a lot of stupid arguments at times. IMDb never moderated it properly. Still the best format though, glad Jim saved it.

reply

We could probably use more moderators since some of them don't post here anymore.

reply

This site is basically abandoned tbh

reply

We still have at least one moderator, who I believe has a way to contact Jim.

reply

The problem is, and this has occurred in my own experience, when these one-man sites owners stroke out otherwise disappear, the site becomes unavailable.

I hope there is a process in place to immortalize the site.

reply

You'd think that but the internet is littered with abandoned websites that are still operable.

reply

As long as someone somewhere are paying the server rent. Which usually is not perpetually funded.

reply

Indeed.

This is ridden with ads, so that lightens it. I doubt its that expensive to run. It's basically just text.

reply

I heard last year that this site was sold. and yes, I am sure whoever runs this site now is making a profit so they could care less what happens here.
