Can you not watch a movie without taking a 2 day break every 30 minutes. Maybe pay attention and stop browsing the internet during films
It could have been nice for more explanation. But it's easy to go too far and have too much exposition dialog like Interstellar did.
2001 and Interstellar are both 10/10s for me but they are polar opposites in terms exposition. It's hard to find a happy medium.

Ah yes that's right, HAL only got super paranoid after the lip-reading conversation, which was after the first change-out of the AE-35.
So if HAL wasn't paranoid before he had seen the lip-reading conversation, why did he report the AE-35 unit as dysfunctional at all? It clearly wasn't his plan at this stage to kill Dave, because he didn't.
But there is something close enough to provide a visual reference. The edges of the frame of the camera. Which shows that the trip is travelling very slowly in comparison to the presumably stationary camera.
