Nothing quite tells you you're watching blatant Oscar bait like a Thomas Newman score, so it was an appropriate choice
It's an Action film structured around high-tension setpieces, the genre is sculpted around visual construction rather than character building - if so-called experts want to experience how a character takes a shit in the morning they should watch a Bergman movie (or alternatively watch Chloe Zhao write a screenplay).
I felt that way about Tideland, this film was at least amusing compared to that relentless borefest.

Trans culture is very trendy right now, the new movie is coming out (no pun intended) at the right time for them. They will push that it was made by transrectors and it will for sure have trans culture attached to it.
Good point about the irony of a storyline about unreality and manipulation back in '99 compared to what the themes of the new one will be.

Most films can be retrospectively trans-allegories if it brings attention, basically they were scripts born in the wrong movie
