I feel like you don't really know the type of movies that get nominated. Oscar bait doesn't mean it's bad. Typically they are good.
1) You have to look at history.
2) Renown of writers/directors/actors
3) Budget
The last collaboration between Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day Lewis was There Will be Blood, a highly cerebrated movie (for good reason). Another collab between PTA and DDL has been highly sought after ever since There Will be Blood.
Low budget movies that go through the indie circuit like Sundance typically have low chances of nominations with some exceptions. Lady Bird, for instance, had a low chance of nomination, but it grabbed enough public attention to get through. A masterpiece like The Killing of a Sacred Deer didn't get any nominations at all, to be expected.
I was watching the Charlie Rose interview with PTA and Daniel Day-Lewis and something struck me: watch this (starting 24:39). DDL says that the experiences before we meet Plainview sharpened Plainview's competitiveness. This makes me more curious about what happened to him and makes me more suspicious that more about the character was written which the audience didn't get to experience.

@landofree So what is your counterargument to the notion "Why does any character need to be a specific gender?" Why did Anakin "need" to be a guy? It was a decision by the writer, a fairly arbitrary decision. There is no reason that Anakin "needed" to be a guy unless you can pose me a reason why his masculinity is integral to the plot. (If Anakin were a girl, she could have babies with a man, for instance, and it wouldn't change anything).
In conclusion, the question is utterly irrelevant because the gender is arbitrary and not a key factor in the plot in any significant way. Rey did not need to be a girl just as much as Anakin did not need to be a boy.
pessimistic/nihilistic ≠ bad.
There are many pessimistic/nihilistic movies movies that are very good. Infact my favorite and second favorite movie are incredibly pessimistic/nihilistic.
There are other issues with Star Wars, main issue being complete lack of focus. When you attempt to put so many sub-plots into one movie then utter lack of character development and lack of care towards the characters/events is the only possible outcome.
