If Pedro Almodovar directed a mashup of the Exorcist and the X-Files

I like the basics of this show but there is an almost wacky, slapstick comedy drama about this that reminds me of an Almodovar film.

Is this a Spanish thing or what? Was this show meant to be slightly less serious?

Despite this it really does get to be kind of dark and scary at times. But I keep wondering what it would be like if it dropped the kind of weird comedy bit.
