Flat


Maybe it's a French thing, but this series is shot really flat. The desaturated color, the compositions that seem to have been shot so they could just get them done. I wonder if part of this is that it's easy to just grab a camera and shoot. You don't have to load film anymore, you don't have to make sure your lighting is just right. Maybe that's what makes people just point and shoot.

Most studios these days manipulate the colors, intensity, saturation, and what not of the frames in order to fit the mood of the show. For instance in movies that are in location behind the iron curtain they will de-emphasize the reds and yellows of the scenes in order to make the atmosphere seem drab and unhappy. Or in a comedy they will crank up the color saturation.
