Based on a true story that will inspire the world?

Wow... talk about patting yourself in the back...

Or. . .talk about marketing a movie, to try and get people to watch it?

. . .Yeah.

reply

...Nah.

If this was a work of fiction then maybe it would be a case of "patting yourself on the back." Since it's based on a true story, it isn't. And yes, I was inspired after watching this film, so the tagline isn't inaccurate.

The use of "will" is what makes it sound like patting yourself in the back.

When Titanic was released in 1997 one of the taglines was "The greatest love story ever told." Really? Greater than, say, Romeo & Juliet? And if I remember correctly when Mortal Kombat was released in 1995 one its taglines was "Nothing on Earth can prepare you for this." Again, really? Nothing on this planet can prepare me to watch a movie based on a video game?

Both are hyperbole and, like the other poster above said, I understand that they're just marketing gimmicks from whichever marketing agencies were hired to hype these films. The directors and writers and other crew aren't arrogant enough to think so highly of their work. King Richard is no different.

Like I said, it's the "will" that makes it sound like patting yourself in the back. "Based on an inspiring true story" is fine. "Based on a true story that inspires the world" is also fine.

Venus and Serena have already inspired countless people. It's just sounded so boastful for this one particular movie that their story WILL finally inspire the world. As if before this their story wasn't inspiring or anything. What an arrogant moviemakers.

If you can't see the difference then you can't.
