A better ending would have been (SPOILERS)

Remove the dome concept from the film and ending with Rem left alone in the farm, then flash forward several decades and show a modern, functional city in the same place, unaware of what went down there in the early days.

Almost anything would have been better. Apparently war has ended any continuing support for terraforming, so Mars is reverting. The dome was survivable, at least for a time, but Rem would have been alone. Leaving it with very limited life support seems to mean that she is as good as dead... Unless there is some nearby settlement with resources. We are given no reason to believe there is anything nearby, so the ending means she is dead. What a grim, unpleasant movie.

Well, if patricide and matricide and rape and revenge is not grim and unpleasant enough, I guess the suicide gamble walk was just as grim and unpleasant. Oddly, I liked this movie because it was one of those that dealt with the primal human realities. It was hard to watch, it was grim and unpleasant, but I got something out of it.

I liked the settlement ... those prefab houses and Steve the robot were pretty cool.

Do you have any idea where Jerry came from and how he got there?

reply

Now, it's been a while and I don't remember enough details to have a clue where Jerry came from. I don't think I'll see the movie again.

reply

I don't recall them stating where Jerry came from. He did say that he grew up there, and that Rem's family killed her parents and moved in.
