Wedding cake?


Elizabeth told Darcy she had picked a "vanilla buttercream with a white ganache drizzle". What she named is two kinds of cake icing, with no mention of the actual type of cake itself. I suppose we are to assume it would be vanilla bean, although it would likely be very bland, unless there would be some sort of yummy filling like raspberry or lemon curd. Even then, two kinds of icing would make it terribly sickly-sweet.

I'm guessing the screenwriter didn't know much about cakes!

After typing that, I realize it sounds sarcastic. But I'm serious. Are you some sort of cake pro or something?

I'm a good chef (did it for a living), but not much of a baker, except for breads. But I do watch a lot of cake competition shows on the Food Network, lol!

I do some cooking but never had a sweet tooth. So it was almost like you were talking another language. Anyway, respect for the effort that goes into creation.

I have yet to see this movie, can't wait till i do, lol. My guess is the buttercream could be the icing as well as the filling; there are many buttercream fillings for cakes. and my guess, since it would be for a wedding, would be a white or vanilla cake. so I just picture an old fashioned Wilton white cake with buttercream in the layers and frosting and then top it off with some white chocolate ganache. It might sound bland but vanilla is pretty tasty. could they have written something a little more exotic, sure. but that's what i think when i read the line.

My perfect wedding cake would include vanilla cake, fresh berries, berry coulis or jam, & loads of Italian meringue on top (amazing stuff, sooo good. It's a little bit technical, but really not that hard (whip egg whites over slow heat until they turn into beautiful clouds: honestly, it's what whipped cream WISHES it could be! & goes together fast.) As I said, I'm not a baker, but my guy loves lemon meringue pie. I go the distance for him!)

I never went to school for baking but I love it and have been baking for about 25 years since I was 14/15. I am only now starting to take it more seriously. i was just having a FB discussion on buttercream. I only ever used Wilton's 'American buttercream.' I never realized there were different kinds and so now I am determined to learn the italian, French, Swiss and German methods.

I also wanted to add about this cake. I just attempted my first 'drip' cake where you pour melted ganache over top the cake so it looks like it's dripping down the sides. I used a chocolate buttercream and white chocolate ganache and OMG the ganache was amazing. I am now in the mind to think she had a vanilla cake in mind with vanilla buttercream and then the ganache poured over it. and it wouldn't be bland or over sweet at all. I am going to make my 2nd drip cake this weekend and this time it will be vanilla cake with vanilla buttercream and white chocolate ganache so I will know the taste will be then, haha.
