Looking at a #1 finish is Sony's release of Jumanji: The Next Level, the sequel to the breakout hit of 2017, Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle, which debuted just before Christmas two years ago and went on to gross over $400 million domestically, serving as Sony's largest domestic release of all-time. This year Sony is getting an even larger head start on Christmas weekend, not to mention a little distance between it and next week's release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, which is important to note considering the first Jumanji debuted after the release of 2017's The Last Jedi. Studio expectations this weekend are for an opening around $35 million from over 4,200 theaters, while industry estimates are much higher, anticipating a debut anywhere from $40-50+ million. So what will it be?

SATURDAY AM UPDATE: Sony's Jumanji: The Next Level is delivering on Mojo's pre-weekend expectations and then some, bringing in an estimated $19.4 million on Friday, heading toward a $50+ million three-day debut. To go along with the strong performance, the film received an "A-" CinemaScore from opening day audiences. Otherwise, the weekend's two fellow newcomers are struggling.

The $60.1 million opening for Jumanji: The Next Level is the 13th largest December opening ever and the largest December debut for Sony. While the film will have to contend next weekend with the release of Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, the opening weekend performance, along with a strong audience reaction — which gave the film an "A-" CinemaScore — puts it in a fantastic position heading into the Christmas holiday frame. Two years ago Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle sat at $52.7 million after its first five days in release and went on to gross over $404 million domestically and nearly $1 billion worldwide, serving as the largest domestic gross in Sony's history. Can the sequel take it to the... next level?

Internationally, The Next Level got its overseas start last weekend and this weekend added 34 new markets for a total of 52, from which it brought in an estimated $85.7 million, pushing its international total to $152.5 million for a $212.6 million global cume. This weekend saw the UK lead all markets with a 5-day total of $12.6 million followed by Russia ($8.9m) and Germany ($4.6m). The film has still yet to release in Italy (Dec 25), Australia (Dec 26) and Brazil (Jan 16).

If it performs anything like the original, it has absolutely nothing to worry about The Rise of Skywalker. Actually, TROS should be worried that a huge chunk of it's potential holiday family audience is lured away by this film. The first film absolutely destroyed The Last Jedi when it came to "legs".

"legs" not really a good term The only thing that matters in the entertainment industry is profit. The Last Jedi made about the same amount of profit as Jumanji Welcome to the jungle neither film destroyed the other.
