Ed has been robbed of glory again and again....on the last show right before he is ordered off Mars through of course dramatic events. he is the FIRST to discover life on Mars.

He is a egotistical selfish A-hole.
I think the purpose of his character is to show us that
heroes have feet of clay.
Kinnaman is a really good actor and has been in a lot of good stuff.
It is sad to see him playing such a goober.
