Why is a black elf/dwarf such a big issue?

Like, why are people complaining so much about it? It is a fantasy story, like...who cares? Shouldn't the character being good and well written be what matters?

reply

Like ... ALL elves are white. Only THAT one just happened to be black. Same with the dwarves, all whites ONLY that one is black.

And the harfoots are somehow of all races. Not one race or at least mixed as you would expect from a small isolated homogenous tribe but ALL possible races.

If you don't have a problem with that ... well, I do ...

sooo
you want more black dwarves and elves so they arnt the only one?

reply

At least it would make sense and they could create a back story on why are there black dwarves. Like: maybe they are descendants of their cousins, the pigmies from Africa.

It would still be wrong but not that wrong.

Why, is black elf/dwarf representation in the Tolkien universe particularly important to you for some reason?

reply

It shouldn't be an issue. There is a reality that exists underneath the mass movement of "anti-wokeness" that undermines every single one of their arguments. Being woke means to be aware of things around you and not ignorant. So that's a BAD thing? Being aware of your world is a bad thing? I don't get it.

Now, obviously both sides of a political specturm can go extreme and take things too far. Both Left and Right have shown the ability to go extreme and really move beyond reason and fairness.

But in this case you have what I see as sort of a reverse-racism where a good number of people in the world, even in 2022 are uncomfortable seeing black coaches leading a football team of partially white players. Or a black CEO outranking his white colleagues. Or a black movie director with white employees working under him. If people think that those things don't still really bother A LOT of people, then you're very naive.

And the same goes for LOTR and ROP. Many fans of Jackson's movies forget that Jackson used people of color in some of his background shots of Minith Tirith and Laketown. I don't see hundreds of thousands of Tolkien fans rising up and proclaiming that Jackson's fllms are "woke."

As far as their actually being black characters in ROP - Is it not possible that an elf and a person from a southern region somehow had offspring? Is it not possible for the same thing to happen with the dwarves? Or the Harfoots?
