Miguel was not good casting

There wasn't any hint of him being Mexican with his accent. Some foreigners can learn English as mimics and their accents are dead on, but a poor child running the border? Unlikely.

They should have cast an actual Mexican.

Speaking of mimics, I once lived with a Mexican guy who spoke English with an American accent. He was fanatical about not being "Mexican".

I tried to speak Spanish to him once and he said "English is basically my first language" and I asked how that was possible growing up in Mexico. He said he started learning young.
(Still didn't make sense).

One day he was telling me a story of how he stumpted his thumb but he was talking about his foot. I said "thumb? Don't you mean big toe?"

English his first language my arse!

I looked it up and in Spanish you say "thumb of foot".

He was sprung. Imposter.

I'll buy that a specially dedicated Mexican kid with a mother who's determined that he does well in school could learn to speak decent English - but not with a perfect American accent! That is simply not possible.

reply

It wasn't quite a perfect accent. It was certainly very good, but if that kid called me up on the phone I'd be able to tell that he wasn't a white kid from across the street.

I will take your word for it. It sounded perfect to me, but then I am not a native speaker.

reply

Point taken, but he was a good actor. Sometimes that counts for something too.
