It's disappointing how they handled Rocket's captivity friends in the story

It was very disappointing to see that out of Rocket, Lylla, Floor and Teef, only Rocket had any initiative at all - and when he - in the last minute - revealed his plan (to escape), not one of them got the chance to help him in any way. They were just... shot. Offscreen. All of them. What?

I mean, they should have given a heroic moment to at least one of them. Pushing Rocket out of the line of fire, helping Rocket open one of the cages, or... really, anything. It still would have been blindingly obvious, none of them can survive, since after an experience like this, there is no way Rocket would roam the universe (galaxy) without them. They were tight as a group. So why didn't they act like a group during the attempted escape? Why didn't they get any moments of... uhm... agency at all?

The way they were handled, I wouldn't even call them characters. They were backdrop for Rocket's heroics. The scene of them naming themselves was well done, but that was a talking scene. My ideas are still pretty basic, nothing groundbreaking, but the writers really disrespected this bunch of already miserable characters by not even allowing them to... you know... do anything. The way it was depicted in the movie was emotional, sure (I felt sorry for them of course), but having all of them get shot like that, felt like the writers saying "oh, and by the way all of his friends are dead, so let's turn the page already".

Do you feel the same? Or were you fine with the way they were depicted?

They were never meant to be heroic and strong characters.

They were aberrations. Failed experiments. That they could actually walk and even talk and have emotions, was all the success those "experiments" had.

That's the theme of the movie... Not everyone is special, smart and amazing.
Rocket was the only one, and they tortured and hunted him down for it. The others were stupid, like Drax. But that doesn't mean their lives are worthless. They also have a lot to offer. Like Drax, they were offering love, friednship and familiar embraces. Not heroic and action acts. They panicked, they couldn't do anything in that moment, only Rocket because he was the smartest.
