There never was a red muppet that looked like Grover. Then one Christmas everyone had to have Tickle-Me Elmo, and suddenly there was a muppet named Elmo that looked like a red Grover. He wasn't there before.

Honestly I always thought Elmo came after I wasn't watching Sesame Street anymore... Now to check and see that he debuted in 1980, 9 years before I was born. I'll be damned.

In our timeline, Elmo debuted in November 1996.
