Even in his slight redeeming moments, he kind of fails. I don't get why Beth still wants him around. This whole 'but he's a good dad' thing really bugs me. Not to mention he actually brought thieves/hit men into the house; it was serious good fortune that his kids weren't home and didn't get hurt.

EDIT The second he claimed he had cancer, I KNEW he was lying. I agree with you that it’s unbelievable that Beth wants to have him around—I mean literally NOT BELIEVABLE. It’s a hamfisted plot contrivance, and it reflects badly on the show. Lillard’s face is so craggy and wrinkled it looks like he came out on the short end of a fight with some very big-grain sandpaper.
