So now that there are two Lion King films...

The 1994 Lion King is regarded as the superior film by many film fans, compared to the 2019 version. Nostalgia on the original version is high.

But what about for someone that has never watched either version? Which one would be superior then?

Let’s use Star Wars as an example. I say this as someone who never watched the original Star Wars 4-6 films until just before the release of The Force Awakens in 2015. I watched 4-6 without any nostalgia, and I found those original films almost unwatchable. They felt dated and I much prefer the recent films, and even the prequels.

Would someone feel the same way if they watched the 1994 Lion King right alongside the 2019 Lion King for the first time? Is it possible they find the 2019 Lion King superior? I think it’s possible.

It depends on priorities. If you prioritize storytelling, writing, acting, the old movies are superior. If you prioritize visuals and CGI, the new ones are superior. To each his own.

One thought, though. Movies whose selling point are visuals age badly. First movie in Cinemascope was The Robe. It was hit back in the day, like second or third top box office in the 53. Today, it's completely forgotten.

I find the storytelling and writing argument on shaky ground since it’s basically the same story, almost word per word at parts. Hopefully we will eventually have people who’ve never seen either film that can give us their insight.
