not bad for a Canadian production

would this make a good TV series ??

reply

no. if worked perfectly within the boundaries of it's runtime and it said all it had to say. there is no need for any addition to what we witnessed.

reply

Really? You didn't have any questions after watching that film?

reply

no. none at all. i would even say that it is the opposite. some stories can only be destroyed by further explanation. the thing is, if you take what we know as a given, then it all makes sense and is a quite powerful ending. if you try to explain it, it will just fall apart. reason being, that there can't be a satisfying full explanation. no matter if you chose to explain it through alien intervention, government experiment, act of god ... it will just stop making sense and you lose the impact.

also, in this case the "why?" does not matter ... AT ALL. what does it matter why or who put them into this situation? it is about what we see, about the characters, what they walk through and about human nature.

i give you another exaple, where the writer seems to have had the same opinion: vincenzo natali's "cube". i won't spoil it for you, but it is an open start and open ending movie, which only makes sense the way it is. now, natali actually wrote and directed it with an ending and some hints within the film towards the "reasons" behind it and he removed and burned that film material, once he noticed that the explanation 1) does not matter for the story and 2) actually takes away from what is shown. that's also why the "sequel" and "prequel", who were done by other people and are disapproved by natali are so bad.

quite some films of similar genres actually destroy what they build up by a cheap and unsatisfying ending.

reply

It would've made a excellent TV series. Especially when you consider so much of it was unresolved.

reply

It was perfectly resolved and the conclusion was inevitable.

reply

I disagree, but to each their own........

reply

agreed.

reply

I don't disagree, particularly about the conclusion. I thought the same thing.

But, I think the story could have been expanded. Not as a hard sci-fi per se, but more of a drama/thriller.

What if the government/military became aware of him? Or religious zealots?

What happens if Jane dies? Or is incapacitated somehow? Are there others like her who can neutralize him?

Are there others like him, using the power for evil purposes?

An author like Stephen King could have done much, much more with this concept/story. As a Canadian production, it's more likely that limited budget and resources forced them to keep the story limited.

It's funny but, as a Canadian, my wife and I can always tell a Canadian production apart from an American one, even American ones filmed in Canada, e.g. X-Files, all the CW superhero movies, etc.

For one thing, Canadian films have this slightly fuzzy, desaturated look to them. These days most stuff is recorded digitally, but Canadian movies always look like they are shot on film. Not sure if this is a technical issue, or an artistic choice on the part of the film makers.

The other has to do with directing and blocking of scenes. American films often feature close-ups, whereas Canadian features seem to favour mid-range shots, if that makes sense. Is this a financial issue as well, i.e. it takes too long to film scenes at different focal lengths? I don't know.
