Questions About the Beginning. SPOILERS!!!

At the start I’m not sure what’s happening & why. We see 2 nuns go to the “God Ends Here” room & go in. The older nun tells the younger to have faith but things go wrong, she gets killed & the younger nun takes off.

But my thing is: 1: if they knew that it was in there, what were they hoping to achieve by going in? To do what? You see the old nun get killed, not surprisingly. 2: Was the demon supposed to be confined to that room? Again obviously not, since we see it out & about. So what was the purpose of the room & why was it always there when someone came to the room?

I don’t know just a few thoughts to mull over.

I assume they were trying to close the portal but failed~

1. They were going into that room to seal the portal, but failed.

2. Valak (the demon nun) was free from the portal, but not able to leave the castle grounds without possessing a human; that's why the last nun hung herself.

Their actions didn't really make sense.

Why the hell did they think they could seal the portal by going the 2 alone against that demon...?

And if the Nun was supposedly confined to the dungeons of the monestary then why didn't they just leave the full place and let the demon alone there?!
