"...[Guillermo] del Toro’s Cold War-era fairytale about a woman who falls for an amphibious man.
...the fairytale, set in 1963, centers around Elisa ([Sally] Hawkins), a mute janitor working at a lab where an amphibious man is being held captive. When Elisa falls in love with the creature, she devises a plan to help him escape with the assistance of her neighbor ([Richard] Jenkins). The world outside of the lab, however, may prove to be more dangerous for the amphibious man than Elisa could have anticipated." - from THE TRACKING BOARD, MAY 2, 2016:

It almost sounds like an Abe Sapien origin story

reply

Totally fits into his filmography!

Add to that sh!t that Doug Jones is slated to play the creature XD HOW IS THIS WATER NOT SHAPING TO BE A PREQUEL?

reply

It's not. If you follow the Hellboy timeline, Abe was discovered underneath St. Trinian's Hospital in the same capsule he was entombed in in the 1800's. Doesn't fit the timeline.

Del Toro likely wanted to make a movie in the same vein because he has voiced that Abe is one of his favorite characters. I'm hoping the character design will be original, however I'm sure elements of it will play off of Abe Sapien.

From the looks of it, this is going to be an intriguing and bizarrely wonderful film (hopefully). And to me the story could be anything as long as a unique and well-executed film by Del Toro is what we get.

It's basically Splash but with the genders mixed up and the merman is not so appealing.
