Star Trek: Ship of Dr. Moreau?

Long time fan of Star Trek, but mostly TNG and the later series except Enterprise. Not a trekker, just a casual fan though.

I was really looking forward to seeing a new series, but apprehensive too. The new movies are entertaining, but they aren't Star Trek. Besides all the canon breaking stuff, they simply lack the core values, the science and the intellectual depth of Star Trek. Unfortunately my apprehensions turned out to be well-founded...

I won't rehash all the points already raised regarding problems with canon in STD, or the stupidity of once again making a prequel series after the failure of Enterprise. These things I could accept if the series was otherwise good. But what I really can't abide, is the depressingly dark and banal setting of STD.

One of the important factors of why the older series were so successful, was that they showed humanity at its best. They shared a positive look on humanity's future - which was sorely needed in the late sixties, but I'd argue even more so now.

It boggles the mind that someone thought it'd be a good idea to turn Star Trek into Dr Moreau's island in space! I'll probably keep watching a couple of episodes, but if it doesn't turn around, I'll have to abandon it.

Felt like an episode of Alien.

Nothing in the new movies breaks Star trek cannon. It takes place in a separate universe and actions in the new films do not affect anything that happened in the Star Trek cannon previous to those films.
