Why did Tally...

Kill her husband? Was that a mental side effect of the drugs?

Was wondering the same thing. Initially I thought that the military had shot her husband in an attempt to kill her and she was able to get away. I think the most likely explanation is that she had a mental breakdown. Probably from not being able to communicate and having tentacle fingers.

Tally kill her husband for self-defence. I am not sure what should we think about a colored husband tried to kill her wife Tally, while a white wife showed love and support to her husband Rick. Because I doubt what your reaction would be if your beloved wife turn into an abomination and is going to live with lizard Sam Worthington on Titan.
This film might deserve your dirty joke, but I would rather give Arash Amel a chance to do better in his next movie.

I didn't get the impression that her husband tried to kill her. Why do you think she killed her husband in self-defense?

I'm not sure what my personally reaction would be if my wife turned into an abomination even though I am aware that she signed up for a super secret military operation involving altering the human genome and sending them to live in Titan's atmosphere.

I would as well. I enjoyed 2/3's of the film.

"Why do you think she killed her husband in self-defense?"

The crime scene. Tally killed her husband with single strick right on his chest - No sign of rampage from madness. Also, the place of the wound was too accurate to be an accident. Her husband died with eye opened without any expression - seems he knew what's coming. Then Tally left his body lay on the bathroom floor - no attempt of rescuing. The shower water is on but her husband was wearing full dress and boots suggests that Tally was having shower when he approached to her and got killed. Later, Tally went to Rick's house to show him her bloody hand with innocent looks on her face.

"I'm not sure what my personally reaction..."

Let's assume in the last scene, a lizard woman and a lizard man are flying side by side on the Titan and they have no previous memory of their family on the earth. What do you think would happen between them? Don't tell me they signed up for that too.

I guess you could make an argument that he tried to kill her based on that, but still it is a lot of assumption. Maybe if the shot would have shown some type of weapon next to his dead body it would have been much more clear, but all we get is him dead in the shower by a single strike so we don't really know what happened which is why I think it is confusing and poorly portrayed.

I took Tally's "innocent look" as she was scared and look what I did, not as I killed him because I had no choice.

Although maybe he was killed on accident? Maybe she didn't know what abilities she had and accidentally killed him? I think that is more plausible than her husband tried to kill her. At least from what we know about his character.

In the crime scene, the shot doesn't show her husband's right hand. So you are right about that.
And as I mentioned, the accuracy of the fatal strick and the fact that she left his body lay on the floor (no attempt to save him) runs counter to the "accident" argument.

The accuracy of the instantly fatal strike could also indicate that she became violent and killed him in the heat of the moment. Maybe she didn't attempt to rescue him because he was clearly dead and she fled out of fear of the military or that she didn't care to move his body because she was mentally unstable due to being turned into an abomination?

The camera makes a point to show his wedding ring which indicates that he still loved his wife regardless if she was an abomination. We are shown no weapon. There are no signs of struggle in the bathroom meaning she could have intentionally murdered him. He is portrayed as a loving husband in the previous scenes. I just don't think there is any indication that he was attempting to kill her.

With that being said, all we really know for sure is that she killed him. Maybe it was intentionally left open to interpretation.

In the previous scene, the dinner party at Rick's home, here is what Tally told Rick's wife -
"He (Tally's husband) thinks if I go and come back, I'll have got it out of my system. [a pause] Be the good wife." There was that "Not gonna happen" expression on her face. Then she looked at Rick in the other room and added: "I wouldn't have made it this far without him (Rick)". Where Rick's wife replied in smile "Well...Yeah, That's Rick". That was right after Tally's husband told his love story. So when I heard that conversation, I was shouting in my mind "W-T-F!". If the audience got that, then we will also understand that the wound on Tally's husband's right chest beside the wedding ring is a metaphor for his broken heart.
So, is this possible that Tally killed her husband intentionally? The question is killing him for what? She was going to leave him and live with Rick on Titan anyways.
Generally, I am OK with "it was intentionally left open to interpretation.", as long as others interpretation is consistent with the rest of the story. but there is no where in the story shows Tally has any violent tendency. Also the card of "the mental breakdown team mate killing his spouse" has been played once in the story already. Playing this card again will make the author seem quite lame due to lack of creativity. Don't you agree?

reply

I certainly think it is possible that she could have killed him intentionally.

It would be repetitive, but how do we know that was not the director's intention? They do show us that this "process" has a history or possibility of having violent side effects.

After fleshing this all out from your comments and exploring other options, I think I am more inclined to believe that she intentionally killed her husband and wanted to be with Rick. They built a relationship while being in the program and were close because of it. They also share a moment when holding hands next to the pool which could be interpreted as romantic which is why in the next shot we get a fearful look on Rick's wife's face.

reply

Again, they were going to live on Titan together anyways. Why would Tally need to kill her husband if she was just wanting to leave him? This film had a decent concept, good acting, was shot beautifully, but the writing quality took a dive after a certain point (and certain extreme liberties they took with the science (esp. the so-called "chemical lobotomy" and jetpack-style flying) pushed credulity. Tragic, seeing a perfectly good concept collapse in on itself, but it can and does happen.

I think maybe Tally was taking a shower and she hadn't realized her full capabilities as far as her powers go and he probably came in to see how she was doing and she went for the kill shot immediately. She was probably scared and reacted out of instinct. That's what I got from her going up to Rick and showing him her hands and then showing him the tentacle fingers. I think she was showing him something that they didn't know that they could do and she was telling him that I accidentally killed my husband and the army is coming for me.
