On July 28th 2017, "The Emoji Movie" opened to the public, with an incredible 0% rating on Rotten Tomatoes after the first batch of reviews were in.

But there was a time when Genndy Tartakovsky's Popeye was lined up to be made instead. Why didn't it?

Because Popeye looked like it might have been a fun and creative movie, and Sony has a record of "take a good thing and piss all over it" to maintain.
