Ok so theres something i noticed while watching the meg (spoilers!!)

Still here? Ok cool...

But is it just me or there were one or two scenes extremely similar to jaws?

Exibit A: the scene where the slightly obese kid asks his mom if he can go swimming (in jaws this was the scene where Alex Kitner gets eaten)

Exibit B: the dog in the water called pippin (who was also called pippin in jaws)

Maybe it was just subtle but I certainly noticed

Yes, they were similar. I think the producers (and/or director) wanted to honor Jaws with a bit of a humorous tweaking. Of course, they did not call the dog by the name given in Jaws. That dog's name was actually "Pippet". But the reference was close enough for me to enjoy the little wink at the fans of Jaws.

There are only so many directions you can go with a shark movie. I suspect anything you do will have been done before.

Would have been sweet seeing him getting chewed up. Like the assistant getting ripped apart in Jurrasic World. I didn't see that one coming.
