Boycott this racist production

Barely a white face in it, clearly those behind the production are racist.

reply

Stop the foolishness, stop trolling, this production has been around for over 40 years and has been cast with blacks.

reply

Maybe, BUT, if you recall the Sound of Music LIVE cast a Black Mother Superior, and the boards were all a buzz with color blind casting. I just think it should be a two way street, don't you?

reply

Someone with tunnel vision really has no place using the term "two way street".

You make a big deal out of race, even though that's not the only thing that comes into casting a role. This production did a gender flop.

The Sound of Music made a choice not to stick to the intended bits. And it cast a great performer in a role.

This production ended up staying with the traditional route. Now how the hell do we know if it was cast with that intention or they instead ended up liking the leads they chose? And regardless why does it matter to you which way it happened?

People like this are troubling when they start acting immature about art. You need to be mature enough to accept when things like this happen and are allowed to exist as much as the things you do like.

As it seems to you you'd prefer everything be blind to restrictions and try on purpose to be as inclusive to every thing as possible. While you may delude yourself into thinking that's for the best, it's only swapping one prejudice for another. Historically and modernly anyone that insists art has to do things one way, is usually going to be described in words not very flattering.

Honestly, I have to say that casting Audra McDonald as The Mother Superior was distracting. All I could think about was that it in 1938 Austria, it would been highly improbable for a black woman to be the Mother Superior of a convent instead of her performance. Sorry, but there are times when "color blind" casting works, and times when it just distracts from the production itself. In the case of "The Wiz", it's a story about black people. It would make as much sense to cast non-blacks in these roles as it would be to cast a black woman as Scarlett O'Hara.

I responded to another comment in a more less direct way. But when I see posts like this I have to ask for some parameters.

Do you not get into much books/plays/movies that are historical fiction unless they research or cast everything accurately? As the more you learn, you should discover lots more examples of products that didn't do their homework than did.

The problem comes in when the "inaccuracy" is so glaring that it distracts from the production/performance.

reply

Only blacks can be racist, don't ya know. No one else can be offended, satire or not.

It may have been an all-black cast since '75, but Annie is a whole other story...

-Dad, who's that?
-Oh, that? One of my patients. He's...sick.
-Will he live?
-It's looking grim.

reply

So true! It's totally racist. And yet studios have to apologize for mostly white casts and get in trouble for not being diverse enough. But it's okay for blacks. Where is the diversity in this production? I don't see one Asian or Latino lead!

reply

Hopefully you are not watching. For crying out loud how often does this occur with an all black cast in a major production?

reply

Were you this upset when "The Sound of Music" aired last year with an all white cast?

reply

What about Peter Pan Live, also from last year?

reply

That be cool if that even made some sense.

Barrie's original play and the musical based upon it include Native characters that were originally played by white actors.

And let's not even mention the gender aspect, where the main character is a male played by a female. By that very nature not even the original play ever tried to cast accurately, and it was staged by the actual original author.

reply

Strange, when Peter Pan and The Sound of Music did their all white cast LIVE Production I didn't hear any of you guys complaining about no black, Hispanics or Asians in those shows. So do us all a favor. Turn off your HDTV, sit down and STFU.

I don't mean to be that type of poster, but I get the feeling you haven't dipped much into historical fiction and productions based upon them.

Mother superior was black. It wasn't logical givin the time and place. But they cast it that way anyway. But to be fair. The dog is white so I guess there is that. SMH
When I look around I see people not colors. Making a big deal about it being an "an only African American cast" which is the actual description of the show. that's
The kind of thing that keeps racism alive.

How many black people were in the original Wizard of Oz?

Damn, you're stupid.

reply

Who knows? They were all wearing make up
But they did employ a lot of little people. It was very PC before PC was cool as far as that goes. :)

Go boycott Jennifer Lawrence movie Joy!

Why?

reply

Damn all of you are around 40 years late in your boycott. You should have brought it up in 1974 when the Wiz first came out.

Just a girl in the world

reply

There were no black people in the original Wizard of Oz. So we should boycott that as well? Lol. Get real.

I think this is a trend for the art police people. Where any cast that doesn't on purpose try to be as accepting as possible is a problem.

I assume a lot of this crowd would say that's the only way to be fair, and completely miss that is a pretty prejudiced stance in itself. As if any casting has do that to be accepted, then there's a hard truth. A lot of works aren't going to be able to done accurately nor will they probably get all the actors they want.

I'm inclined to think the mature way to act is to let it be free and make choices based on accuracy or talent. I enjoy casts of both kind. But the kicker here being for those people, to accept this is to accept things they don't like have as much right to exist as the things they do like. Which I assume is their big problem.
