It seems to me that he's her surrogate father. She is really attached to him and admitted that saying "I almost lost you once, I don't want to lose you again."

Yeah she seems to view him as a father figure and he is also very protective of her.

Unfortunately her real father showed up, and he's not a father anyone would want. I thought they were going to let that character go, but they found him a new heart.
