Have any descendents replicated relatives' tattoos?

Watching this movie, I wondered if someone in my family had been a camp prisoner, might I be tempted to have my own arm tattooed with the number that was put on their arm.

As time goes on, it would be a way to keep that fact a physical part of the present world.

It would freak the people who saw it out, however.

I would tend to agree with you on both points. One thing I learned from this movie is that there was not a lot of physical evidence gathered from the camps (either because it was destroyed to hide the crimes or it was left to rot because people weren't motivated to prosecute). So I'm thinking the tattoos were pretty important in proving one's story. I'm not sure how I would feel about someone getting that number tattooed on their arm by choice. It would be a powerful message but also a macabre one.
